On the 14th of November, on a dark and stormless night, my little Ford Escort was attacked by a raging deer.
I was not even driving. In fact, I was not even in the car. Jen Brown, a long term Intern at the Park was leaving the next day -- returning to the state of New Jersey. Jessica, another Intern, had some photos of Jen with the Wolves that they had taken earlier that day during my last Wolf Photography Seminar of the season. They really wanted to go out to One Hour to get the film developed before Jen left and I was busy doing web stuff. In that they had no car of their own, I lent them mine. They were gone a very loooong time and then the phone rang. It was the sheriff telling me to come out to SR 43 because there had been an accident. I remember him telling me the "females are both OK" which I thought was kinda humorous. On the accident report there are boxes for "number of injured" & "number of dead" and I was tempted to put one in the ladder for there was one fatality. The deer which hit my car. Oops, I mean to say latter, not ladder, though there was a ladder involved. The girls had picked up a ladder for me at Lowe's and it was sticking out of the back of the car. It's a bit bent now, but is still quite functional at least.

They were coming back to the Park when a Buck, I believe a 10 pointer 250 pound plus buck, ran across the road and hit the car from the side. It's head came through the windshield and then it did some body damage. The poor thing was injured and had to be shot by the Sheriff. On top of that, we did not even get to take it for the wolves. A local came by and picked it up, well it was fresh meat so as long as it did not go to waste that's ok.

Fortunately, except for being shaken up, Jen and Jessica were fine. The car was quite drivable and they were able to get it back to the Park. The next day I took these photos before I removed about half the windshield and following Dr. Klinghammer, drove it to the repair shop where it resides to this day... I thought I would post some of the photos I took with my digital camera for those who want to see what a deer can do to an Escort :-)
