On November 11, 1999, I flew out to California on my annual trek. It was overcast this year, so not much to see out the windows.... I did not even get a window seat. So I did not take any photos this time. In fact, I ended up not taking any digital photos at all until I drove over the Sierra's to visit Animal Ark on November 17.
 |
Yes, it is snowing in California. Not too surprizing when you consider that this photo was taken about an elevation of 7,000 feet.
This is Donner Lake, yes, named for that famous little incident of cannibalism... They have some good restraunts down there, but I was running a bit late so I found some beef jerkey, at least I think it was beef, and had that instead. |
 |
The view is very nice from up here. |
 |
Lots of trees whith snow. I guess that explains all the ski resorts in the area... |

Finally on to Animal Ark.
Animal Ark had a very serious fire. It was started by a car parked on dead grass a couple miles down the road. It did not take long for the fire to spread up the canyon. 45 minutes in fact. Fortunatly, Diana and Aaron were here and were able to get the smaller animals to safety. Miraculously, the animals which were left all survived and only the large cats suffered burns which they are on the mend from.
They were also very lucky that their house did not burn. It's a house Aaron built and he built it well. The walls are stone. Brush also was not close to the house which really helps in such fires.
I was up here last year and if you look at my travel page for 1998 to see how lush and full of threes this place was. It will take a looong time for the trees they have planted to grow back. |

I also do their web site. You really should check out www.animalark.org
This is the behind the ridge behind the house. There are animals back here, but the fire just burned around the pens! |
 |
In fact, the place is quite the miracle. It's obvious God is looking over things. This is right in front of their house. Complete devistation, yet the house, pens on either side, all saved and no animals killed. |
 |
Even behind the house, complete devistation. The fire just went right around. |
